Doctor Checking Patient

Healthcare facilities are a stressful place for many people. Multidisciplinary research is shedding more light on the connection between the body and mind, and how architecture design of built environments contributes to health and well-being. It’s also revealing how a space can affect the sensory nervous system by causing anxiety, stress, or being overstimulating.

Hospital patient rooms should be designed to help improve recovery and support the patient's positive well-being. However, many shared patient rooms do not promote a healthy atmosphere or space for patient recovery which leads to negative experiences and unnecessary stress and anxiety.

How might we create adaptive hospital patient rooms that facilitate positive emotional and mental well-being during patient recovery?

Iterative Inclusive Design Process

We looked at how patients navigate hospitals and the pain points they have during and after their visits. We decided to narrow it down to shared hospital room space which was where most of their time was spent.
Our mission is to collaborate with hospital patients and stakeholders to create guidelines for adaptive, accessible, and inclusive shared hospital patient rooms. Ultimately, be able to create positive emotions, improve healing and mental well-being.
We mapped out the hospital patient room functionality, design, and how both influence patients, families, hospital staff, and administrators. Due to their changing needs, we must support a diverse range of people, ensuring that none feel isolated, alienated, or uncomfortable in the rooms.
Our focus is on 2+ beds patient rooms. Through our design, we want to explore whether patients' perceived notion of quality care can change and how this touch point can impact the overall hospital experience of the patients and other user groups as well.
