The initial challenge was to understand the needs and preferences of hospital patients. We decided to focus on shared patient rooms that accommodate 2 or more people. This allows us to tailor the environment to meet patient-specific needs and expectations.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">We based our approach on our initial data collection. We talked with real patients, nurses, and families in our own lives. This helped us understand their experiences and pain points with hospital rooms. Since elderly patients have unique health care needs, we focused on patients ages 50 and over.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-CA\">Designing patient rooms within large hospitals is twofold, especially in big, multicultural cities. First, these spaces must meet accessibility standards. Second, they must accommodate cultural differences, language barriers, and physical disabilities. Two overarching themes are broken down into problem space causes and outcomes, identification of users, and possible solutions. Theme 1: Current hospital configuration and layout contributes to feelings of isolation. Poorly designed facilities negatively impact the healing process, having effects on mental health and emotional well-being. This affects both patients and staff and one possible solution to explore is biophilic design to create more soothing indoor experiences. Theme 2: Unclear hospital navigation and wayfinding creates challenges for the patient\u2019s journey. Hospitals are difficult to navigate and confusing wayfinding can cause issues for all patients and particularly those with dementia or visual impairments.
